In May 2018, Arts Visalia proudly presents an exhibition entitled WAG Artist Society. This is the first showing at Arts Visalia of the watercolor and mixed media artists of Arts Visalia’s Wednesday Art Group that’s part of the Open Studio Workshops which encompass Donna Coleman, Diane Hyde, Ellen Miguel, Kathleen Mundy, Ernestine Nunes, Garnette Charlene Pryor, Mae Reuter, and Ann Riemersma. These ladies have an exciting range of work to display. The WAG Artist Society assembled in 2008, originally from the Senior Center in Visalia, and paint year-round as a group at Arts Visalia and houses of group members. They meet every Wednesday at Arts Visalia from January-May and then August-December to paint and dabble in other mediums, feeding off of one another’s constructive comments. Due to children’s classes in the summer-time at Arts Visalia, they take their painting and rotate Wednesdays at one another’s houses so that they never miss a beat. Each are excellent in watercolor, but have a second medium that each use, whether pastels, oils, or acrylics. Q and A from the WAG artists themselves: Q: When did you start to paint? A from Donna Coleman: “I began a watercolor class at the Visalia Senior Citizens Building with teacher Mary Woney in 1996. We formed the Wednesday Art Group in July 2008.” Q: What are your favorite subjects? A from Ann Riemersma: “Landscapes, florals, and the beauty God made for us.” Q: Are you a realistic, abstract or an impressionistic artist? A from Ernestine Nunes: “Impressionistic – trying to paint freely.” Q: Do you use photos, real life or plein air for your subjects? A from Mae Reuter: “Photos.” Q: What are your future goals as an accomplished artist? A from Ellen Miguel: “To continue to improve and enjoy art.” The exhibition will run May 2nd –May 25th with an opening reception on First Friday, May 4th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and is sponsored in part by Bueno Beverage, Jack & Charlie’s, the Vintage Press Restaurante, the Southern Pacific Depot Restaurant, Bank of the Sierra, and the UPS Foundation.
